Our Review of the Schwinn Trailblazer bike trailer

The Schwinn Trailblazer is a new addition to Schwinn's line of affordable bike trailer / stroller child carriers, replacing the Schwinn Mark I. Capable of handling up to two passengers as either a bike trailer or a stroller with an 8" swiveling front wheel, the Trailblazer is the newest version of the Schwinn Mark I bike trailer. Just like the Schwinn Mark II, the Trailblazer also converts to a walking stroller, though the two trailers use a different style of swivel wheel.

The Trailblazer is slightly lighter than the Mark II and Mark III (which converts to a 16" fixed front wheel jogging stroller) and does not have the "outrigger" bars on the frame that cover and protect the rear wheels. The frame of the Trailblazer is squared rather than rounded aluminum, but the fabric designs of the Trailblazer and Mark II are virtually identical, with the exception of available colors. A retractable, zip down rain cover protects the rider(s) if the weather takes a turn for the worse.

Unlike the Schwinn Mark II's single front swivel wheel, the Trailblazer utilizes two smaller side-by-side wheels that attach just as easily and without the need for tools. All Schwinn bike trailers attach easily to the lead bike with a universal coupler. The Trailblazer can easily accommodate two passengers up to 50 lbs. each.

Bottom Line: Schwinn bike trailers sell on their price, not so much their features. The Trailblazer is as basic a trailer as they come, with a design that strips some of the benefits offered by the Mark II and Mark III. The Trailblazer maintains the same overall functionality; only with a different frame, no jogging stroller conversion like the Mark III, and no outrigger wheel guards. No bells and whistles here, but you will get a stable bike trailer that will get you and your passenger(s) where you want to go, without damaging your pocket.

Not bad

I don't do much biking, but am hoping to start. I have a 13 month old son who is on the small side. He does not fit well in the harnesses. They are too tall for him and he slides around and looks very uncomfortable. Other than that I have had no problems. I use it on gravel roads. It's easy to use and fairly light weight.

bent on first use

I have the 2006 model(blue, red, and some yellow) and it worked great as a stroller. It was also easy to attach to my husbands bike, fit my 3.5 yr old and 2 yr old nicely, although not much leg room for the older child and I had to put a pillow on the seat because he complained that he was uncomfortable..Besides that it seemed fine until we went riding. My husband took what seemed to be a wide enough turn around the sidewalk corner but bumped the fire hydrant. The entire hitch bar bent back and by the time we got home it was almost pulled straight and completely unaligned w/ the bike. I am disapointed w/ it's lack of durability since the trailer did not bump into the hydrant w/ much force. 2007 model looks identical except for the colors.

Comments from The Staff:

I'm sorry to hear that you're having a problem with your bike trailer! The Schwinn trailers are covered under manufacturer warranty - I'd try getting a hold of Schwinn, especially if you just bought the trailer, and see if you can get some assistance from them with your warranty. Or, if you purchased the trailer from us within the last 30 days, give us a call and we can see about arranging a return for you.

Christina
