Our Review of the SafeGuard Go booster seat

The SafeGuard Go is an innovatively engineered combination car seat with distinct safety advantages over a belt-positioning booster. Traditional youth / toddler combination car seats are quite bulky, and function first as a harnessed forward-facing seat, then a belt-positioning booster. The soft-backed SafeGuard Go offers the same safety benefits of those seats, but in a more compact and travel-friendly package, making it ideal for on-the-go families. This combination seat from SafeGuard provides the highest harness weight capacity of any combination car seat yet: 60 lbs. in the 5-point harness, and 100 lbs. as a backless booster seat.

The 2008 SafeGuard Go offers these Improvements:

  • New integrated headrest with more substantial padding for comfort
  • Harness minimum weight is now just 22lbs - allowing for longer use
  • Crotch strap now has three positions (instead of just one) for better adjustability
    • Stair-stepped adjustment lengthens the strap as your child grows

BENEFITS FOR MOM AND DAD

Booster car seats rely on a vehicle's seat belt restraints to protect a child in the event of an accident. The SafeGuard Go is the first "hybrid" booster car seat, combining the easy portability of a backless booster with a unique 5-point harness, LATCH installation, and a padded headrest. The result is a safe and comfortable car seat for kid up to 100 lbs. that exceeds all government crash-test safety standards and is extremely easy to install and transport.

Installation

The SafeGuard Go installs in two ways: as a backless booster seat for use with the seat belt, or as a 5-point harness seat and headrest with LATCH. In order to use the SafeGuard Go's backrest and 5-point harness, your vehicle must have a top tether anchor. The top-tether of the Go secures the soft back, headrest, and harness. [See our diagram in the 'Features' tab below for more details.]

1) For use as a harnessed seat; for children at least 1 year and from 22 ? 60 lbs

  • Lap/Shoulder Belt + Top Tether
  • Lap Belt + Top Tether
  • Lower Anchors + Top Tether (LATCH)

2) For use as a booster; for children from 40 - 100 lbs

  • Lower Anchors
  • No installation - simply position and secure child with Lap and Shoulder Belt

A Note on Installing the SafeGuard Go:
*Your vehicle's manual may state a set weight limit for its LATCH anchors (40 or 48 lbs.).

*All vehicle manufacturer's anchor points must comply with the NHTSA's requirements.  Those requirements are standard and apply to all vehicle manufacturers.

*SafeGuard's testing shows the Go with a 60 lb. occupant is in compliance with the amount of force exerted on the anchor point requirements as outlined by NHTSA.  The increased weight of the occupant is offset by the decreased weight of the seat.

*SafeGuard urges parents to consider both their recommendations (60 lbs.) and those from the vehicle manufacturer when making your installation decision.

Convenience

The SafeGuard Go is perhaps the most convenient car seat in its class. The removable headrest / harness system folds down, allowing the entire Go booster to fit easily inside the included carrying bag. This booster is not only safe, it is ideal for travel.

BENEFITS FOR JACK OR JILL

No other harness-equipped booster seat currently on the market offers as high a weight capacity as the Safeguard Go, and the safety benefits it provides for your child are beyond compare. While certain combination boosters (also known as a "combination" car seat) do have harnesses, none can match the Safeguard Go's 60 lbs. harness weight capacity. The padded seat and armrests, improved headrest padding, and adjustable crotch strap create a comfortable ride for any child.

Comfort

The Safeguard Go's padded seat and armrests are always in place to provide your child with comfortable seating, with or without the padded headrest. The headrest has recently been enhanced with thicker padding to create a more comfortable ride, and the new adjustable crotch strap creates an even better fit for your child than before. For additional comfort, recline the seat and tighten the tether for proper tension and safety.

Safety

The Go and it's cousin the Safeguard Child Seat are two of the most thoroughly tested child car seats on the market.

  • NHTSA FMVSS 213 Safety Certified
  • Tested in dynamic crash scenarios that exceed government standards
  • Front, rear, and side impact crash tests

Years of testing went into SafeGuard car seats before going to market

Safeguard wishes to reassure parents that the Safeguard Go was thoroughly crash tested at the Center For Advanced Product Evaluation and will keep your child safe and secure in a 5-point harness up to 60 lbs. The Safeguard meets or exceeds all standards set forth by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

COMPARISON

SafeGuard has outdone themselves with the Go and the outstanding forward facing SafeGuard Child Seat. In the process, Safeguard has outdone the entire car seat industry, establishing a new standard for child vehicle safety systems. The Go is so unique, we really can't compare it to any other models directly. Parents looking for a high-value booster seat should also check out the innovative clek olli or the Britax Monarch.

Very Satisfied

We bought this seat for my 5 y.o. to replace a Britax Marathon. Although she still fit into the Britax by the manufacturer standards, she needed a booster because of her long legs. She's 46" and 42 lb. and fits well into the booster. She gives it 2 thumbs up for comfort. The harness, latch and tether features are great. This seat should last her until she no longer needs one.

Terrific car seat

Reviewer: Anonymous , Summit, NJ Date: April 06, 2008
This is a terrific car seat! I have children ages 2 and 4 and like to keep each of them in 5-point harness seats. For carpooling, it was necessary to buy a third seat that would fit in between 2 large car seats (Britax Marathon and Graco Cargo). This seat fits between them nicely, and because it has a 5 point harness I can let my younger child ride in it too. It is a very comfortable seat. It installed very easily (I use seatbelt and tether strap, there are no latch connectors for our middle seat).

Great seat - one problem

Reviewer: Ragan , Chester County, PA Date: April 06, 2008
Initially hesitant to forgo the use of our Britax but the comfort & ease makes the transition to a "big boy" booster all the more easier! Now, if your company could just provide an easy transition for a mom who cannot believe that my four + two year old are no longer in a Peg Perego Primigi! As stated in other comments - the seat really does not provide any protection for the "slumping" head factor when the child sleeps. Concerns me about pressure on their neck and ability to breathe properly. Did other parents find a solution?

Not great for playdates and carpooling

Reviewer: Beth , Austin, Texas Date: March 20, 2008
I love this seat in our car. The 5 point harness with a booster style seat is great. However, I am finding many people don't have a tether anchor in their car or don't know how to use it. So I usually have to take my son over to a play date instead of letting him ride in his friend's car. Also, our grandparents have a convertible and there is not a tether avaiable. We will have to purchase another seat for their car. I wish the information on the seat had mentioned the back of the seat is collapsible: the only way it stays up is with the tether. If your tether were not directly behind the child's seat (like in a Suburban - there is only one tether meant to be shared by all 3 seat positions) I'm not sure how the seat would work.

Great Booster!

Reviewer: Anonymous , Outer Banks, NC Date: March 13, 2008
My almost 3 year old outgrew his Britax Roundabout so we bought the SafeGuard Go. It's a great seat, easy to install and mostly easy to use. I wish there was more head support for when he falls asleep, this has been the hardest transition from the cushy Britax baby seat to a booster, but I think this is the case with all boosters. I also liked the strap tightening mechanism on the Britax much better, I find adjusting the straps on the Safeguard to be difficult. I do believe this is a safe seat, and that is what matters most. He has also ridden in some other (cheaper) boosters that I feel are far inferior when it comes to safety and ease of use. So overall, I think we made the best choice, it's as close as I've seen to perfect and hopefully the last seat we have to buy for him.

Awesome preschooler carseat

Reviewer: Ellen , Rochester, MN Date: March 11, 2008
We purchased this for our 34lb 3yo who is almost out of his britax roundabout. We installed it in a 2004 Camry. We had a really hard time finding a quality carseat that wasn't huge, this carseat is perfect. It was extremely easy to install, the belt adjustments are very easy and after 1 month we have yet to have them tangle. Because of its low profile it is also very easy for our 3yo to get into on his own.

SafeGuard

Reviewer: Dr. AA , Boca Raton, FL Date: March 09, 2008
Excellent product. Strong build quality. Essential discriminatory characteristic from most other booster seats is the critical 5-point safety harness system. In our SUV, we still keep traditional large car-seats. In my 2-door sports car, these larger seats simply don't fit, and this Safe-Guard Booster is the best alternative. It is expensive, but we think worth it, and the company's no-compromise philosophy is appealing and has an obvious associated cost over competitor products. You can save a few $$ if you buy the previous model, but we purchased the 2008 model which had some small upgrades.

Great car seat!

4
Reviewer: Devin , Chicagoland, IL Date: March 04, 2008
We purchased two Go seats (2008 model) to replace our other traditional seats that we had been using for our twin 2 year old boys. We wanted 'smaller' seats that did not take up as much room in our van but still provided the needed protection. The Go seats work GREAT. They are very slim, allow the seat back to recline/incline as needed, and fit the boys well. Installation was very easy as is adjusting the straps, etc. While they say you can install them in 1 min. I would allow 3-5 but that is still not bad if you need to move it from time to time. The only issue is that the head restraint seems to force the boys shoulders and head forward more than is comfortable. We removed them and just recline the seat backs for sleeping. I should note that since they do not have a rigid side frame (the back is all soft material) they can fit in places larger rigid seats might not. For example, you could easily fit three Go seats across in the 3rd row of a mini van as long as you had three LATCH and tether points. Try that with a normal car seat! Booster conversion looks to be very simple and should work until they are ready to just use the normal seat belts. All in all, a great product. Four stars out of five only for the head restraint that does not seem to work well for us.
