Our Review of the RECARO Signo convertible car seat

The RECARO Signo convertible car seat is a deluxe version of the RECARO Como convertible. The Signo has the same basic features and stats as the Como, plus a few additional features like an infinite harness adjustment, double wall head support, and a LATCH swivel connector to sweeten the deal.

  • Rear facing 5-35 lbs.
  • Forward facing 20-70 lbs.

BENEFITS FOR MOM AND DAD

The Signo is the premier convertible carseat produced by the world-renowned automotive safety engineers at RECARO. The Signo's key benefits are its high harness weight capacity and easy convertibility that make it the only car seat your child may ever need.

Convenience

The Signo is equipped with extra-easy adjustment settings for the headrest and harness. The recline adjustment for the rear facing position adjusts with just one hand. As an added bonus, the Signo's back cover protects your vehicle's seats from scratches, dents, and tears.

Installation

The RECARO Signo is a convertible car seat that can be forward or rear facing, depending on your child's size. It installs easily with LATCH or your vehicle's safety belts.

  • Be sure to check the LATCH weight limitations of your vehicle in the owner's manual

BENEFITS FOR JACK OR JILL

The Signo car seat from RECARO combines all of the best features of RECARO child seats into one very comfortable, all-purpose seat that adjusts easily to accommodate your growing child. Unique features like the headrest adjustment knob allow for "infinite" headrest adjustments, meaning you can customize the fit of the Signo so that it accommodates your child's height and size perfectly.

Comfort

The plush fabrics, energy absorbent padding, and ergonomic design of the RECARO Signo provide security and cozy place to ride. Lined with EPS foam and wrapped in soft microfiber materials, the Signo's seat is engineered to reduce pressure on your child's rear and knees. The double wall headrest support makes the Signo extra sleep friendly, assuring that your son or daughter's head won't slump over when they nod off.

Safety

RECARO children's car seats are precision engineered to provide peak protection for your child in the event of a collision. The RECARO Signo is one of a select few convertible carseats with a harness weight capacity of 70 lbs. It secures with lower LATCH tethers or your vehicle safety belts.

  • All RECARO car seats are fully FMVSS 213 certified.

RECARO Side Impact Protection (SIP) comes from the deep EPS lined seat and side wings of the Signo. This extra padding around these areas provides additional impact absorption in the event of a side collision.

COMPARISON

The Signo's closest neighbor is the lower-priced RECARO Como, which has the same basic stats as the Signo but fewer features. The Como lacks the Signo's infinitely adjustable headrest and harness.

Best car seat I've ever used!

Reviewer: Michelle , Chicago, IL Date: September 04, 2008
I'm not one to leave reviews, but I just had to on this one. My eldest is 14, youngest 5 months, so I have used many different car seats over the years. For the 5 month old, I started with the baby trend infant seat (hated it!), switched to the radian 80 (mediocre), then finally to the Recaro Signo. I cannot say enough good about it. It was the only one where the bottom straps didn't land on dd's thighs. It fits so perfectly, no twisted straps, very cushy, soft. The infinite adjust feature is wonderful.I just love it.

    THE MUST HAVE CAR SEAT

Reviewer: Aimee , Woodstock, IL Date: August 22, 2008
I researched a lot of seats prior to purchasing. The RECARO Signo convertible car seat is superior to all others. First, it comes from a company that produces safety seats for auto racing..I think they know a little something about safety. The SIP is an amazing feature, easy to install..awesome LATCH buckle system---no more pinched fingers for me! My 11mo old son fits well, easy to adjust the straps...have not had any twisting issues. My advice would be to not keep them too loose when child not in the seat. Absolutely worth every penny. You can not put a price on the safety of your child.

    Love our RECARO Signo

The RECARO Signo car seat has far exceeded our expectations; we are more then pleased. My husband is an EMT so safety is our first priority especially when choosing a car seat for our children. My 3 year old daughter loves her pink Signo (she was 2 when we purchased it), she often falls asleep in it and her head doesn't flop over like it did in her other car seat. We have never had any problems with getting her in or out of the seat or with the straps twisting as others have reported. We also haven't had any problems seeing over the seat while driving and I'm only 5'1". As far as installing the seat, the directions in the manual are very easy to follow and it's very simple (we have to move our car seats from one car to another about 4x's per week), once the seat is installed it is very sturdy and won't budge and inch. Another reason we chose this seat was that it is recommended that your children remain in a car seat with a 5 point harness for as long as possible, in this case our daughter will be able to use the seat up to 70 lbs. We made the mistake of ordering my younger son a Britax. We wanted a seat specifically for infants but he hates it and the material makes his skin break out, a complete waste of money for us. We will be ordering a Signo for our little man promptly! I highly recommend this Signo to all who value safety and comfort for there little ones.

Sits too high and blocks the view

    2
Reviewer: Anonymous , West Lafayette, IN Date: May 08, 2008
We recently bought the Signo for our youngest daughter, since we are very happy with the Recaro Young Sport booster that we have for our 3.5 year old. Whereas the Young Sport fits snugly in the car, the Signo looked like it was made for giants, and for giant cars! We have an Audi A4 Avant, so it is a midsize/small car. The Signo was sitting up very high, especially in the rear facing position, and completely blocked the view for the driver. Our daughter is only 10 months, and I want to keep her rear facing for at least another year for safety, so I will get by with another seat for rear facing, but once we turn her around, she will definitely get a Recaro Young Sport. Fortunately we had paid extra, so it was no problem to ship it back.

    Overall, a great seat

My daughter is 4 and we purchased the Signo after she outgrew her Britax. LOVED the Britax. As with others, I have experienced huge problems with the straps twisting, but even she has learned the quick fix for that. If they improve these straps, I think they should replace them on the car seats of those with twisty ones. It could be a safety hazard. She can buckle herself into this seat with ease, but cannot unbuckle it - love that. She adores it and loves being in it. She says is it very soft. I thought she might find the side head rests annoying, but she loves to lean against them when she is tired. As to installation - the first time is a pain, but it gets easier. There is a learning curve. For instance, I didn't know the tightening/loosening strap was snapped on. DUH. Once I unsnapped it was much easier to loosen/tighten the car seat straps. I agree about the infinite adjust being buried - but it does mean that you can just untether it, loosen the straps and adjust without having to take it all the way out of the car. The last thing to think about it the cover. My daughter got sick in her seat and it was nearly impossible to get off the seat. The cover wraps under the infinite adjust system making it so you have to peel it out from around and over the headrest and then wrestle it back on when dry. All that being said, no car seat is perfect! We do really love it, but if Britax had a competitor, I would check to see if they had fixed some of the design problems that the Recaro has.

    Ricaro Signo

We are very pleased with our Ricao Signo carseat. We have not had anything negative happen, nor have we had any problems with the straps twisting like some of the other reviews have mentioned. Our son is 8 months old and weighs 22lbs and fits very comfortably in his new seat.

    We like it!

We had our Signo now for 3 month. So is our daughter now, she had it from day one. The twisting harness problem We do not have, since we losen the straps every time she gets out and tighten them up again when she gets in, due to different clothing she might wear (thickness is the word here). The seat is soft, offers good protection (SIP) and is easy to use, we too have to use a rolled towel to tilt the seat more, not a big deal. We use the seat in our '05 Dodge Ram (4 door (RF) and '06 Jeep Liberty (RF) with no problems. Adjustments are easy and quick. The only thing my wife and I have to realy complain about is the buckle! I have strong hands/fingers, but pressing the red release button is hard and takes a good grip, otherwise I would crush my childs pelvis. I understand it has to be hard for children to open, but not that hard. As we had orderd the seat we heard there is a pad that goes below the back and lifts the child behind higher to make strapping easier. They shipped it at no charge, installation was easy and it does make a big difference. I can see where in small cars the seat may have hight issues. Other than these little things we are very happy with our seat, and would highly recommend it to anyone who loves their child and wants the best protection (SIP). We have taken our daugther offroading (mild) in this seat and she was asleep for the entire time, that tells me either she is nuts or the seat is comfortable. :-)

    Safety first

Reviewer: Anonymous , Rochester, NY Date: March 05, 2008
We researched lots of carseats before deciding to purchase the Signo. As far as safety and cost-effectiveness, we give it 5 stars. However, we are using it rear-facing for our very tall 5 month old and we had to put foam under the base to get it reclined enough to get her in the seat in our envoy. That was really disappointing considering the price of the unit. Hopefully, they will recognize the need for a steeper recline in future models. Other than that our daughter loves it and we feel secure in the fact that she is safe and comfortable. We also like that will be the only carseat we need to purchase until she hits 7-8 years of age. The adjustable headrest/straps is a dream!
