Our Review of the Joovy Big Caboose double stroller

The Joovy Big Caboose is a tandem double stroller with triple-passenger potential. Some might call this the 'ultimate tandem twin mobile', made specifically for families who are on the go and need room to grow. The overall design and sturdy construction of the Joovy Big Caboose emphasizes functionality and durability, utilizing a steel and aluminum frame that folds up into a nice slim package for storage or transportation.

The Big Caboose is an ideal stroller for families with young children of varying ages. If you only have two children in your care, you can also check out the Joovy Caboose. The Caboose has room for two: one in a harness seat (which has the same big range of compatible car seats*) and the other riding on the back.

  • The extra seat on both the Caboose and Big Caboose are padded and equipped with a 3-point harness.

The possibilities offered by the Joovy Big Caboose to parents with multiple children are extensive, giving it a value over and above tandem strollers like the Graco DuoGlider or Combi Counterpart. Those strollers only have room for two, and are only compatible with infant car seats from their respective companies. The Joovy Big Caboose is compatible with an extensive list of car seats* and has a patented Stand On 'runner' for your toddler to ride on while you push, as well as a rear facing seat at the back.

The big picture is that large or growing families will have plenty of seating options wit the Big Caboose. Possible combinations include: newborn + young toddler + older toddler; infant twins + toddler; 2 newborns; twin toddlers + older sibling; the list goes on and on.

Another really nice thing about the Joovy Big Caboose is that the rear seat is elevated, allowing the child in back to see what lies ahead. The underside storage basket is HUGE, which you will undoubtedly appreciate seeing as you've got at least two kids - maybe three.

*The two seats of the Joovy Big Caboose are compatible with the following car seats:

Bottom Line:  This is undeniably an excellent tandem stroller, due mostly to its unparalleled versatility. But, at 37lbs., the weight could pose a problem for some. When fully loaded--with two kids in the front seats and one rider in the rear, you may need a strong back to get it moving. Still, it has a very stable design and handles pretty well as long as you keep it on smooth surfaces. (Off-roading is not recommended, as small wheels make it pretty much impossible.)

For everyday use like shopping and sidewalk strolling, the tandem Big Caboose beats a triple side-by-side hands down--you can't get a Triple through a standard doorway. The wide range of compatible car seats makes the Big Caboose a solid investment, giving it considerable long-term usability and good resale or hand-me-down potential. It is more expensive than the other tandems at EliteCarSeats.com, but the higher price reflects the range of qualities and features that are exclusive to the Joovy Big Caboose.

Doesn't fit in my minivan

I still love the idea of this stroller and it seems to be very well made. I was just very bummed because it does not fit into our new Nissan Quest minivan.

Quit complaining

Reviewer: Carrie , Los Angeles Date: February 23, 2008
Geez...what does everyone expect? It is gigantic but it serves a great purpose. I have 1 1/2 year old twins and an almost 4 year old. When we go to the zoo of for trips that require alot of walking this stroller is perfect. This probably isnt what you want for an everyday stroller because of the size but cant the complainers out there give some kudos for all of the positives about this stroller. When my twins are in there side by side stroller they are constantly taking each others snacks, drinks...etc away from each other and now they cant!!! My 4 year old likes having the freedom of being able to sit or stand when he gets tired. Ya he might have to bend a little sometimes but it sure beats not having the option. I love the swivel canopies. That is an option that is hard to find and what child likes the glaring sun in their eyes. I just have to give Joovy a thumbs up for coming out with this stroller!

JOOVY BIG CABOOSE A MUST FOR THREE CHILDREN!

Reviewer: holly , cleveland, Ohio Date: April 29, 2007
I LOVE This stoller!! We have 3 children 3 yr, 2 yr and 5 mo. This has been LIFESAVER!! I have had no problems and it fits easily into our honda odyssey. I do not use the carseat adaptor my daughters britax carseat fits snuggly in the second seat, it would have to be used if you are putting a carseat in the front seat. It is light weight and pretty easy to turn when you consider I am pushing around at least 100 pounds of children. I would buy this again in a heart beat. I LOVE IT

Joovy Big Caboose

I just received this stroller and it seems to be very well made. I took the front canopy and tray off and had no problem fitting it in the back of my Chevy Venture minivan. I have 7 children and wish this stroller was available 10 years ago. I've been through several double, triple and single strollers and this is very well made. The only improvement I would like is for the back child to be able to climb in and out herself and the trays to go on and off easier. Thank you Joovy for an excellent product!

I am in the process of trying to find yet another stroller. We, too, will have a 3, 1 1/2 and newborn in about 4 months. We have the Joovy double stroller and have been satisfied with it. However, after reading about the difficulty with the triple stroller, I will continue to look. Thank you again.

It works

Reviewer: Anonymous , Fort Riley, KS Date: March 18, 2007
We have 3 children, 9 months, 21 months, and 4 years old. This stroller is bulky and hard to push and the rear platform barely has any room for our oldest. The front 2 seats are great, and I love the 3-point harness. It is not nearly as nice as our Graco Duoglider, its made out of cheap metal. I think its going to work fine for trips to the mall and zoo, and perfect for when our 4 year old is too tired to walk anymore. I just wish it was better quality and had more room in the very back.

Big stroller

4
Reviewer: Anonymous , Rockford, Il. Date: March 03, 2007
I purchased this stroller for my new twins and their 2 1/2 year old brother. Because we live in the midwest, we have yet to use the stroller. We have put the infant seats on and they attach very easily, but I can see where the space for the thrid child is tight and he will have to bend over to seat on the seat. Also standing is a little short on room for him, but we will see how it goes on long walks. The other problem is it does not fit across the back of my Durango and so if we travel I think we will have to pull off the front wheels for a better fit. I still feel I will like this stroller because it has to be long to accomadate three children and it steers very nice. Time will tell.

Seems good

4
Reviewer: Anonymous , West Palm Beach, Florida Date: February 12, 2007
I was so disappointed reading this review. I purchased the Big Caboose before this was posted, and I'm currently waiting for delivery. This stroller seems to have everything I was looking for. Infant seat compatibility, stand on, stadium seating, and 2 snack trays. I have a 2 1/2 year old and 7 month old twins. This stroller seems to have it all. The previous poster was complaing about the size of the stroller, but suggested that a triple would be better. I have a triple. They are huge, first of all you have to take out all the seats before you can fold the frame, and the stroller takes the entire back of my van. Removing 3 seats seems to be a lot more difficult than removing a carseat adapter. Gosh in a couple of months, they won't even be in these carseats, and I will be able to fold and go.

TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE

1
Reviewer: MyThreeSons , Doylestown, PA Date: January 31, 2007
I wish there were some reviews on the Joovy "BIG" caboose before I purchased it earlier this month but as it is a new 2007 model, there were none. I have been searching for this stroller since I found out I was pg with twins last year. I needed something to take my baby twins and toddler out in. Baby trend made one like this abouut 5 years ago but quickly doscontinued it. The concept of this stroller is too good to be true as the design just leaves little to be desired.

First of all it is called the "BIG" caboose because it is huge. I don't have a problem pushing it; but once collapsed it barely fits in my large SUV. You have to remove the infant carrier attachment in order to fit it in my SUV. (It really hurts your thumbs to have to do this every time.)Fortunately, it is very easy to collapse and not too heavy (about 35lbs.)

If that were the only problem, I'd be fine yet my toddler can easily get out of the "seat belt" on the jump seat and he is now proficient at dragging his feet making the stoller nearly impossible to push. When standing, my son (who is 36 inches tall) has to bend in to ride and fit. If he actually stays on to ride. Thank goodness there is a strap accross the handle arms because he leans all the way back on it.

With an infant carrier in each front seat, there is virtually no way to access the storage basket and the jump seat is then renders useless due to the angle of the seat in front of it.

Finally the foot rest for the seats keeps coming unattached from the frame.

Overall, I would say to spend a little more and purchase a triple stroller. I wish I had.

Comments from The Staff:

Joovy built the Big Caboose based on customer feedback on Caboose products. Mom's and Dad's were emailing and calling asking them to develop a "triple" version that allowed an older child to use the rear platform while seating two younger children. They heard many complaints about the lack of legroom for the middle and rear children in traditional triple strollers. They also heard a lot of talk about how heavy the triples were.
So, they built a product that:
1. Allowed three children but wasn't too large to fit into a vehicle.
2. Had a middle seat that actually had some leg room.
3. Included two infant car seat adapters that would accept a wide variety of car seats.
4. Had car seat adapters that were removable/flexible - but safe.
4. Allowed the older child to climb on and off - so Mom's didn't have to pick them up each time.
5. Used aluminum wherever possible to keep the weight down as much as possible.
When you put all of these together you get the "Big Caboose". There are definitely tradeoffs on the product. The rear seat is much more usable in 4 to 6 months when the infant car seats are not installed. It's also easier to get in and out of a car without the car seat adapters. If they made the product small enough to fit in any car (with the car seat attachments) then there would not be any room for the children.
Also, if we could have more info to give to Joovy about the foot rest coming unattached, we?ll send that to Joovy right away. I?m sure they would be anxious to hear about an issue like that.
