Our Review of the InSTEP Quick N Lite bike trailer

New from InStep for 2007: The Quick N Lite is now available in New Colors.

The InSTEP Quick N Lite is about as aptly named as can be. This lightweight, aluminum framed bicycle trailer assembles without any tools, so you'll; be out and rolling in a matter of minutes. The Quick N Lite also includes a stroller conversion kit, so you can switch it from 2-passenger child bike trailer to a double stroller in no time. The water resistant fabric is quite durable, and a built-in weather shield will protect your passengers from the elements. The best feature of the Quick N Lite is that, at only 25 lbs., it weighs less than any other InSTEP convertible bicycle trailer.

As far as quality, InSTEP is an economy brand. The Quick N Lite definitely does not have a "handmade" feel, but if you're simply looking for a bike trailer / stroller for occasional use, you'll get decent performance out of this InSTEP bike trailer.

Bottom Line: The Quick N Lite has 16" quick release rear wheels, compared to the 20" wheels and wheel guards offered with the InSTEP Rocket Aluminum, which is the next step up in the InSTEP trailer family.  Smaller wheels can be great, or not so great, depending on your needs. While you will get a more compact fold, which is ideal if you're trying to conserve storage space, you won't get the shock absorption of larger wheels. If your neighborhood (like ours) sports some potholes, bumpy sidewalks, and unpaved trails, you may find that a larger 20" wheel will roll more smoothly.

A Fine Trailer

5
Reviewer: Allen , Shaker Heights, OH Date: July 16, 2007
Historically I've always had a child seat. This year, though, when I replaced my bike, I needed to switch to a trailer. Our kids are 13, 6, 3, and new in March. The middle two were *thrilled* and wanted to take the trailer everywhere. I began to discover that I could and I was suddenly biking way more often than I've had the opportunity to in years. This worked as long as my wife was taking the baby to the office enabling me to bike the other two to school. As Max' desire to go to work began to subside so did the opportunity to take the others out. As I became more frustrated, I decided to try strapping the car seat in with the consideration that it is supposed to keep him safe in a car accident and should work in the trailer if it could be strapped in securely. It worked *beautifully* and made the other two happy enough (better to be a bit crushed than have to take the car in their minds). This let me take any combination of the youngest three (except all of them) This design was well tested when I failed to invert the stroller wheel and hooked a curb cut as I turned from the street to the sidewalk. Max (the baby) was the only one with me and he was held in place true to form. He was unhappy, but none the worse for wear; we finished the rest of the ride with no issues, though the strolling wheel was smashed. Yesterday, we went on rolling 20 mile ride with 2 toddlers (my 3 year old and her best friend) in my trailer and it was no issue. That ride ended with my 6 year old fading completely about 4 miles from the end (she had skipped the middle 10 miles). Since we were on park paths, I decided to put her bike on between the stroller bar and the trailer, and let her ride with the little two. While this isn't a recommended configuration, the trailer held up quite well. I have used this trailer all over town, with kids, groceries (up to 2 oversized and fully loaded bags behind the seat and two smaller fully loaded bags under the feet), a baby, off road (not with the baby, and not *serious* off road), and most combinations thereof. The kids have loved it, I have loved it, and everything has gotten home safe. Our single biggest complaint is that the web straps for restraint are uncomfortable since they are 1 inch (or so) flat straps. I like that the trailer arm is sprung as this softens the impact of going over curbs, pot holes, uneven sidewalks, tree roots, and trail ruts (and yes I've take the kids through all of these things while they slept). This trailer is a real work horse and has survived everything I've put it through while keeping the children safe. We are trading it in for a Chariot because the car seat solution has become untenable and Chariot has solutions for babies. I am seriously concerned about the amount of storage in the Chariot since I've become spoiled by what can go into the Quick n Lite, but that's a different review. If this is in your price range, it is great!
